Oktoberfest: Where to find Real German Beer, Sausages and Yodeling in Korea

Updated: Feb 7, 2020

Going off the beaten path is a small island town on the south coast of Korea where you can find a little piece of Germany and a bit of preserved culture. In the 1960’s and 1970’s around 20,000 Korean coal miners and nurses moved to Germany to find work. While some stayed in Germany, many moved back and eventually settled in Namhae. Those who returned created a little German village and brought back with them food, culture and architecture to this tranquil and remote area by the sea.

If you’re looking to celebrate Oktoberfest this year, visiting German Village in Namhae is legitimately the best place to do it in Korea. The migrant workers who came back to Korea brought spouses who for the most part carried on with the traditions and celebrations from Bavaria. Along with authentic weisswurst and bratwurst, Oktoberfest features real German beers amidst a backdrop of whitewashed houses, red-tiled roofs, and immaculately designed gardens. The village is uniquely European and stands out as a haven for those who had sought to live a good German life in Korea.

As German Village was not originally constructed as a tourist attraction, it has retained some of the charms of the old world. While the island is still not quite the most popular destination for Koreans to visit year round, Oktoberfest attracts thousands of visitors for their three-day celebration. This year’s celebration will take place from October 6 to 8, 2017. The event offers German traditional performances, music, drinking contests, yodeling, special historic exhibitions, parades, fireworks and more. You’ll find long tables covered with large liter glasses, platters of sausage and bread surrounded by happy people drinking and singing.
