Living in Korea | How to dispose of Items in Korea with Wonderful

Korea is pretty strict regarding item disposal. Disposal of large waste such as furniture, electric appliances, and some types of construction materials require obtaining disposal stickers from the local Dong (district) office. You can visit the office directly or get stickers online – both can be a real struggle if you do not speak Korean. Throwing away large items without stickers will result in a fine imposed by the Dong office. And if you are in the middle of demolishing your business, and you have a lot of construction and furniture waste, purchasing stickers for items one by one may not even be an option.

Wonderful can assist you with disposing of waste – both single items and large quantities, as well as donating items and selling them to pawn shops. Here are some options for disposal for you to consider.

Donating to Charity

Charity organizations in Korea usually either distribute donated items directly to people in need (eg. KUMFA - Korean Unwed Mothers Families Association ) or resell them and donate the proceeds from the sales (eg. Beautiful Stores , Goodwill stores ). The items that they usually accept are pretty specific and sometimes, they only take unused ones among them. Wonderful can assist you with finding and contacting charity organizations in your area, checking with them the items that they accept, arranging to pick up items if available, or providing directions if you prefer to bring the items by yourself.

Pawn Shops

We can also assist you with reselling your items to pawn shops. They usually only take furniture and electric appliances and they don't take them if they are too old. The payment will be small, but it can be a better alternative than paying for disposal stickers.

Private Disposal Service

If you are trying to dispose of large amounts of waste and/or do not want to deal with disposal stickers Wonderful can help you hire a private disposal service. They will come with a truck, pick up the waste and dispose of it for you. The Dong office requires to be notified when large amounts of waste are being disposed of due to the possible inconvenience it may cause for other residents in the area. We can also assist with contacting the office on your behalf as well.

Free Pick-up for Electronic Appliances

If you are planning on disposing of electronic appliances, you can apply for a free pick-up service from this organization. They usually collect large appliances such as refrigerators, TV, and washing machines. If you have small items then you need to have more than 5 items for a pick up. We would need to first check with them on what items they can take though. Wonderful can help with the process.

Disposal Stickers

Finally, if you are trying to dispose of a small number of items (mattress or table etc.), our assistants would be happy to help you get a sticker and schedule a pick-up by the local disposal service.
